Very awesome! My daughter has been diagnosed with autism. Temple Grandin Is definitely an inspiration and has helped my wife and I get out of our own way to believe our daughter will be okay. She’s a happy, artistic, animal loving, imaginative first grader who is doing well so far. She has Apraxia of speech which causes communication barriers. But we’re fortunate to know the basic framework of what her challenge may be. Thank you!
Loved this interview Jessica! So fun to realize I can’t even imagine what other minds are like. I always assume everyone is thinking in words just like me. Also: three-dimensional smell pictures!!!
That was a fascinating read for me. I dropped out of high school and got a job making jewelry. My wife went to work on Wall street in 1968 and showed me a terminal that could display stock quotes and got me interested in computers. I eventually got ahold of a computer manual that described the instruction set. I then got a copy of the 360 operating system source code and read the instructions until I understood how the operating system works. That got me hired as a developer and I quickly got to the point I was managing a group PhDs all the while thinking I was a failure because I didn’t have a high school diploma!
This is a fascinating story! I wonder how many more out there have similar stories... What an amazing rise, Eric. It just shows that schools have such a limited view of "success."
Sean, I’m so glad Dr Grandin has been an inspiration. She is a remarkable person and it sounds like your daughter is too! Dr Grandin had very delayed speech as a child -- and she spoke so thankfully about her mother’s belief in her potential. You sound like wonderful parents. Sending lots of light your way.

What an amazing conversation! Thanks so much for sharing this! And I love the insight into how my dog is perceiving the world!
Thanks Boaz! Ha- yes, your dog is experiencing 3D smellscapes!!

Hi Jessica, the illustrations are gorgeous. Who makes them? Apologies if this has been answered previously and I missed it.
Yes, the illustrator is Maria Mendoza! Isn't she fabulous???
